Conduct

The Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research (2018), applicable to all researchers including historians, underscores the importance of ethical practices such as transparency and accountability. These principles are critical when utilizing digital tools or handling research data to ensure integrity and honesty. As digital record-keeping becomes increasingly prevalent and integrated, maintaining public trust in the profession is vital by adhering to the values of honesty, integrity, and accountability (ARC, 2018).

In their professional capacity, historians are expected to exhibit courtesy and respect toward others (PHA, 2015). The code also extends to behavior on social media, stipulating that violations of ethical standards, such as harassment or misrepresentation on platforms like the AHA’s Facebook or Twitter, may lead to members being restricted from participation (AHA, 2021). This indirectly regulates historians' use of digital communication tools. Additionally, the Professional Historians Australia (PHA) outlines in Section 2 of its conduct guidelines that members must uphold these ethical standards consistently.
